Ancestral Gift

Here is a n excerpt from a book I am reading - a hilarious take on our sexual behavior. So read and smile :)

" You have trillions of ancestors. Can you think of one true thing you can say about every single one of them? You can’t say they were all the fittest survivors, because many died young. You can’t even say they all loved, or had thoughts, or cell walls, or nuclei. You can’t even say they were aware they existed.

The one true thing you can say about every single one of your trillions of ancestors is that they each reproduced. Those that didn’t have offspring didn’t get to be ancestors. In the race to reproduce, only the best reproducers won, every generation. Think of that. The most powerful force in our bodies and brains is the accumulated desire of all our ancestors, refined, concentrated, and made more powerful than any desire we imagine more important. With such a horny force animating every microscopic detail of our cells, we should think of all human needs as sub-needs arising from the desire to procreate. Our hunger for love, our ambitions, our desire to belong, our urge to make beautiful things, our need to talk, our voracious curiosity, our fear of death, our longing for transcendence, our willingness to die for our community, our ache for God. All our qualities evolved to the extent they served the reproduction of genes in ourselves and our beloved annoying relatives. "
